About this piece

Published by Leduc in 1899 and dedicated to the cellist Marguerite Chaigneau, this D major Sérénade belongs to the Romantic genre-piece tradition of the barcarolle and impromptu. Bru Zane describes it as music for family and friends: the cello stays almost always in the foreground with all the cantabile expression, while the piano occasionally enters into dialogue. It is cast in a simple ABA' form, with a central passage that slips a tritone away into A-flat major, and Bonis also issued it in a version for violin.

Technical overview

ABA' form in D major with a middle passage in A-flat major; the cello carries a sustained cantabile line throughout, with the piano occasionally answering. Bru Zane notes no particular technical difficulties.
