About this piece

Casalmaggiore is one of Lanzilotti's early works with field recordings, inspired by what she calls the 'particularly beautiful construction noise' she heard in the streets of a small Italian town. As the recording moves through the town, the performer wanders between boxes of musical material, anticipating or mimicking the sounds, translating everyday noise onto the instrument with nontraditional playing methods. Originally for viola and fixed media (2016, premiered by the composer in Melbourne in 2018), the cello version was written for Paul Dwyer in 2020. All sounds are to stay relatively quiet and blend with the fixed media; the fixed-media file is downloadable from the work page.

Technical overview

Open-form boxes with suggested timings; nontraditional playing methods to imitate recorded construction sounds; quiet dynamics throughout, blended with a fixed-media track (WAV download from the composer's site).
