A suite of seven short dances for cello and piano: Prelude, Valse rappelée, Adagio, Pas de deux, The Mirror Toccata, Scherzo and The Return. The commission from the Music Study Club of Metropolitan Detroit asked for one bowed instrument and piano, and Rorem chose the cello, a pairing he had not written for before. A reviewer hears an 'intimate conversation between cello and piano', with the cello singing over the piano's 'occasionally wonky in-and-out cadences' and an 'odd, slightly drunken waltz' at its heart. Boosey & Hawkes published the score and part in 1984; two movements (Adagio and Pas de deux) also appear in The Boosey & Hawkes Cello Anthology.
