About this piece
A fantasy for cello and piano drawn from Corigliano's 1991 Metropolitan Opera commission The Ghosts of Versailles. The piece moves through three sections, 'the world of eternity', 'the world of the stage' and 'the world of historic reality', mirroring the opera's three planes of reality, and a ghost figure 'floats in and out', binding the sections together. Corigliano later expanded material from his 1990s Phantasmagoria scores into a cello concerto of the same name for Sterling Elliott (premiered January 2024 by the Orlando Philharmonic).
