About this piece
A substantial four-movement suite, Serenade, Daylight, Lament and Alone, written for Lynn Harrell on a commission from ten organisations including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, the Ravinia Festival, San Francisco Performances and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Harrell gave the premiere at San Francisco's Herbst Theater in January 1999. The music was inspired in part by poems of E. E. Cummings, Salvatore Quasimodo and W. S. Merwin, and the Edition Schott score (ED 30004, 58 pages with part) was edited by Harrell and pianist Simon Mulligan.
