About this piece

A ten-minute set of variations for solo cello and orchestra written for Jan Vogler and co-commissioned by the Dresdner Musikfestspiele and Westdeutscher Rundfunk. Muhly describes it as 'a quick set of variations' in which 'each variation has its own orchestral obsessions and colours, whilst the soloist remains constant: a straight line moving through antagonising brass, interrupting percussion, and a near-constant halo of higher strings'. Vogler premiered it on 18 May 2019 at the Kulturpalast, Dresden, with the WDR Sinfonieorchester under Cristian Macelaru, and recorded it for Sony Classical as the opening movement of the three-composer concerto Three Continents.
