Henze's Englische Liebeslieder (Canzoni d'amore inglesi, 1984–85) is a 25-minute work for cello and orchestra in six movements: Ruhig, verhalten; a second movement at crotchet = 72; Bewegt, heftig, stürmisch; Ernst, getragen; Tango; and Sonett. The 'English love songs' of the title are wordless: each movement is a song without words for the cello over the orchestra. Schott publishes the score (ED 7418; study/rehearsal score ED 9119, 103 pages) with orchestral material on hire.
Technical overview
Sources describe only the movement characters (restrained, stormy, grave, a tango, a sonnet); the solo part carries a sustained lyrical role across all six movements.
