About this piece
A fantasy for cello and piano commissioned by the Bardin-Niskala Duo (cellist An-Lin Bardin and pianist Naomi Niskala), who performed it at Bowling Green State University on 17 October 2022. Becenti, a Diné composer from the Four Corners area of New Mexico, built it on Shi Naashá, the song the Navajo composed on returning to their homeland in 1868 after the Long Walk and four years' internment at Fort Sumner; when they saw Tsoodził (Mount Taylor), the southern sacred mountain, 'they were overcome with joy'. In his programme note he calls music 'a healing force', and says the song 'talks about going in beauty and freedom'. The score is available from the composer.
