About this piece
A work for solo cello and string orchestra written for Ken Freed, conductor of the Mankato Symphony, in honour of the Lakota people. Cante t'inza are 'brave heart' or 'strong heart' songs from one of the original Lakota soldier societies, and Avery builds the piece on melodic, rhythmic and spoken motives from a traditional cante t'inza recorded by Ben Black Bear, Sr. and R. D. Theisz. The score and parts (violins I and II, viola, cello, double bass) are sold as downloads from the composer's website.
Technical overview
A solo cello line over strings that uses col legno battuto, ricochet, repeated harmonic glissandi, false harmonics and Sprechstimme for colour and emotion.
