About this piece

Copland for Cello is a 24-page Boosey & Hawkes collection of twelve Aaron Copland melodies adapted for cello by Quincy C. Hilliard, distributed by Hal Leonard (HL 48003074). It draws on Copland's vocal and stage music: Simple Gifts, I've Heard an Organ Talk Sometimes, Vieux Poème, I Bought Me a Cat, Laurie's Song, Billy and His Sweetheart, Dirge in Woods, Zion's Walls, Ching-a-Ring Chaw, The Little Horses, Going to Heaven! and Fanfare for the Common Man. The cello book is sold on its own. The piano accompaniment is a separate volume shared across the series (Copland Instrumental Album – Piano Accompaniment, HL 48002531). The Royal Conservatory of Music (2016 Cello Syllabus) sets eight of the arrangements from Grade 3 to Grade 6, including "I Bought Me a Cat" at Grade 4, "Zion's Walls" and "Fanfare for the Common Man" at Grade 5 and "Dirge in the Woods" at Grade 6. J.W. Pepper grades the book Medium Easy.

Technical overview
