About this piece

Tres piezas en clave de tango is a three-movement duo by the Mendoza-based composer, flautist and teacher Adriana Isabel Figueroa Mañas. Hildegard Publishing says it 'combines traits of traditional chamber-music style with the music of the Tango,' with contemporary colours and rhythms that give it 'a distinctly Argentinian flavor.' The composer's works list gives it for cello with harpsichord or piano and records a 2009 premiere in Buenos Aires. Later performances in that list include concerts of the Foro Argentino de Compositoras in 2015 and the Rivers School Conservatory's Seminar on Contemporary Music for the Young (Weston, Massachusetts) in 2017 and 2018. It was also played at the 'Mujeres Compositoras' concert at Mendoza's Teatro Independencia on 3 July 2022, a performance the composer has posted on YouTube. Theodore Presser, Hildegard's distributor, calls it 'a marvelous break-out program piece for the accomplished duo' and marks it for advanced performers. The first piece is set for ABRSM Grade 6 (List C, from 2024); score and parts are published by Hildegard (494-02858).

Technical overview

Three movements, roughly 10–11 minutes in all: I. Allegretto deciso & tangueado (quarter = 110); II. Lento; III. Allegro milongueado. It combines tango and milonga rhythms with a lyrical slow movement; the specific technical demands have not been checked against the score.
