About this piece

Gwyneth Walker finished The Open Land for solo cello on 30 July 2025 in New Canaan, Connecticut, and posts the score as a free PDF on her website. The score is headed by a line from the naturalist John Muir, "The spirit has led me into the wilderness" (Yosemite, 1871). Its footnotes give the dynamics two characters: piano is "the landscape: descriptive tone," and mezzo-forte or forte is "the biker/traveler experiencing the beauty of the landscape: expressive tone." The piece opens Slowly with rising arpeggios marked "a widely spaced chord, suggestive of the open land" and ends that section on a harmonic. A "Quickly, flowing" section of triplet arpeggios follows, and it closes "Slowly, as at the beginning." Walker gives it away among a group of instrumental scores she describes as "gifts for students and other performers on a limited budget," asking that no more than one free work be performed on a program. Other free cello scores on her site include the solo suite The Green Mountains (2010) and the duo Of Cliffs and Sacred Spaces (2023).

Technical overview

One movement, about 3:20 (76 bars, 2 pages), in slow-fast-slow form. It calls for wide arpeggios across all four strings, frequent meter changes (4/4, 6/4, 3/4, 5/4), slurred triplets, double and triple stops, pizzicato chords, tremolo, a natural harmonic, and short treble-clef passages that climb to about E5.
