About this piece

will we... is a piece for cello and pre-recorded electronics by Ben Lunn. Georgina Aasgaard premiered it at Imperial War Museum North in Salford on Remembrance Sunday 2019, at the 'Breaking The Silence' event, where Drake Music were the commissioned creative associates working with young Disabled musicians and composers. The title answers the Remembrance declaration 'we will remember them'. Lunn wrote that the piece asks whether we remember everyone who resisted fascism or only 'those who conveniently support our ideology'. The electronics are built from songs of anti-fascist resistance, among them Fischia il vento, Warszawianka, Partizaner Marsh, the Roma song Aušvits and Zog nit keynmol, chopped into fragments of half a second or less. The live cellist 'navigates around the space created with mournful lines' over pre-recorded cellos, while the fragments grow more insistent until the piece ends defiantly with words from Zog nit keynmol. The Scottish Music Centre sells it as a download: a 9-page score with the pre-recorded track.

Technical overview

A single movement of about 8 minutes for live cello with a fixed pre-recorded track (supplied as a .wav file). The cellist plays sustained, mournful lines that must stay coordinated with the track over a long, slowly building span.
