About this piece
Eidolon is a nine-minute work for solo cello by the Ngāti Porou and Ngāi Tūhoe composer Dylan Lardelli. SOUNZ dates it to 2001, and it is dedicated to the cellist Mok-Hyun Gibson-Lane, whose performance on 11 April 2002 is the earliest SOUNZ lists. Gibson-Lane recorded it for Waiteata Collection of New Zealand Music Vol. 7: Emerging Composers (Waiteata WTA007, 2003), and it was played again at Contemporary Visions 20 in April 2009. The score, headed 'Broad and Smooth' (crotchet = 48), is a study in fragile colours: lightly touched harmonics (diamond noteheads), left-hand and snap pizzicato, playing on a single named string (sul D, sul G, sul C, sul A), glissandi, sul ponticello, flautando, col legno battuto and a bounced-bow passage, all in constantly changing metres. Technical overview
A single movement of about 9 minutes, written in bass and tenor clefs and reaching high into the tenor register, in metres that change almost every bar (4/4, 7/8, 5/8, 3/8, 5/4, 3/4). It asks for natural harmonics, left-hand and snap (Bartók) pizzicato, pizzicato chords, sul-string playing, glissandi, sul ponticello, flautando, col legno battuto, ricochet bouncing and very fine dynamic control from ppp to più f.
