About this piece
A twelve-minute solo in three movements, emerging, playful and hushed. The composer describes it as a piece about creation and transformation in which the 'blooming' is a struggle, at times fiery and harsh: a slow, quiet opening builds to unrelenting intensity, a lighter scherzo still echoes that aggression, and the last movement finds peace through gently varied repetitions of a simple motive. Premiered by Andrea Yun at the Scotia Festival of Music, Halifax, in June 1999. The Canadian Music Centre rates it Advanced.
