About this piece
A three-movement work for five cellos (Adagio, Scherzo, Rondo). The Adagio is made entirely of harmonics and quotes small passages of Haydn's Cello Concerto in C. The Scherzo, inspired by the cello ensembles the composer played in, switches quickly between 3/4, 5/8 and 7/8 and has two free sections where each cellist chooses a favourite fast and slow excerpt to play. The Rondo uses col legno battuto, knocking on the instrument and stamping. The first and last movements were commissioned by the Agassiz Chamber Players. The Canadian Music Centre rates it Advanced.
