Fania Chapiro's Cello Sonata No. 2 (1956) is a three-movement work (Andantino, Scherzo: Allegro molto, Allegretto) in which Prokofiev's influence is strong, with a jazz-tinged finale, though the voice is distinctly her own. Chapiro (1926–1994), a Dutch pianist and composer who grew up in the Dutch East Indies, was barred from performing during the German occupation and organised secret house concerts instead. The sonata is published in the Forbidden Music Regained series of Donemus, the Leo Smit Foundation and the Netherlands Music Institute. The linked recording, the first movement, is by Liubov Ulybysheva and Daniel Grimwood of the Brundibár Ensemble (Forgotten Voices Rediscovered, 2023).
