About this piece
Rembrandt Frerichs's Double Concerto brings together three musical worlds: a string orchestra playing in a flexible, 19th-century rubato style, a cellist in the role of a traditional concerto soloist, and an improvising "free soloist". It was commissioned by the Cello Biennale Amsterdam for Kian Soltani and the kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor with Amsterdam Sinfonietta, who perform it in the linked video. The improvised part can either open the piece or grow gradually out of the orchestra's opening, and Donemus also publishes a version for cello, percussion and strings without the free soloist.
