Julius Röntgen's Cello Concerto No. 2 in G minor (1909), dedicated to Pablo Casals, runs as a sequence of five connected sections: an Improvisation (Allegro non troppo), Andante con moto, Allegretto scherzando, Andante espressivo and a fiery Allegro non troppo finale. Röntgen, a German-born composer and pianist, spent most of his career in Amsterdam and directed its conservatory from 1912 to 1924.
