About this piece
An unaccompanied cello piece of about nine minutes, composed in 1979–80 and revised in 1997; it is the earliest cello work on the composer's works list. Cellist Julie Charland gave the first performance of the original version at the Aspen Music Festival on July 10, 1981. Theodore Presser issues it from the composer's own edition; the publisher lists a dedication to Laurien Laufman and the opening marking 'Sempre appassionato e con rubato espressivo'.
