About this piece
An unaccompanied cello work of about 13 minutes, the second of Singleton's 'Argoru' series of solo pieces for different instruments; the publisher's program note explains that the title is a Twi (Ghanaian) word meaning 'to play'. It was commissioned by cellist Ronald Crutcher, who premiered it at Yale University's Sprague Memorial Hall on December 11, 1970, and later recorded it for Albany Records. Carman Moore's program note highlights its extended techniques and precisely notated timings. According to the Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, its 1972 performance at the Darmstadt Summer Course was the first there of a work by a Black composer.
