About this piece
Stolen is a short three-movement sonatina for unaccompanied cello, commissioned in 2016 by cellist Amanda Gookin for her Forward Music Project. According to the composer's program note, it tells the story of a child forced into marriage: the first movement grieves for the childhood she loses, the second conveys her fear at being made an adult too soon, and the third her unwilling acceptance of that life. The note connects the piece to the high rate of child marriage in the developing world. Gookin recorded it on Forward Music Project 1.0 (Bright Shiny Things, 2020).
