About this piece
Four Women is a four-movement work for cello quartet, each movement a musical portrait of a woman of African descent: Queen Nzinga of the Mbundu people (in present-day Angola), the anti-lynching campaigner Ida B. Wells-Barnett, the activist and scholar Angela Davis, and the Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Its title and structure come from Nina Simone's song Four Women, and it belongs to Lomax's 12-album cycle 400: An Afrikan Epic. UCelli: The Columbus Cello Quartet recorded it, and in 2021 it was presented as an hour-long documentary film, commissioned by the Johnstone Fund for New Music to honour the youth orchestra Urban Strings Columbus.
