About this piece
Divided is a 12-minute piece for solo cello and string orchestra, co-commissioned by the Sphinx Organization, New World Symphony and Carnegie Hall. Montgomery's 2020 note presents it as a response to the sense of helplessness caused by continual crises such as racial injustice, discrimination, poverty and climate change, with the solo cello as a voice crying out to be heard over a gritty accompaniment. Cellist Thomas Mesa and the Sphinx Virtuosi played it at Carnegie Hall in October 2022 and recorded it on the album Songs for Our Times (2023).
