MADIBA is a symphonic work with a prominent solo cello part, commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra and inspired by the life of Nelson Mandela. It premiered on 27 February 2015 at Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, with cellist Khari Joyner. In an ACO interview Moore explained that the cello leads the narrative: brass outbursts repeatedly cut off joyful string and wind passages, a long low cello solo with tuba depicts Mandela's imprisonment, and the cello rises with the orchestra to close. An expanded version was danced at the Kennedy Center in 2017 in a ballet choreographed by Jeremy McQueen.
