About this piece

A slow, roughly 13-minute piece for cello and piano from 2011, premiered by cellist Rebecca Hartka and pianist Pei-yeh Tsai. In a Da Capo Conversations podcast interview, Green explains that he wrote it during a summer in the Netherlands for his duo partner, cellist Mathieu D'Ordine, while recalling hikes in the foothills around Boulder, Colorado; he describes the music that came out as "icy slow, cold, serene." Green later made versions for cello and harp (2014, for the Providence Premieres Festival) and for viola and piano (2016, for Castle of our Skins).
