About this piece
A seven-movement suite for cello and piano from 2015, commissioned by cellist William Jason Raynovich and pianist Mark Sudeith with support from the Music Department at Chicago State University. Six of the movements take their starting point from songs in the medieval Galician-Portuguese Cantigas de Santa Maria. According to the composer's note, he borrowed pitch material, motives or melodic contours from each cantiga as the seed for new music, so the source melodies are often hard to recognise.
