About this piece
In Memoriam is an elegy for unaccompanied cello, written in October 1980 for the memorial service of the poet Richard C. Raymond, the composer's uncle. It was meant to follow a reading of his poem 'Journey at the Turn of the Year' as a reflection on it, but is usually played as a stand-alone elegy. The piece opens with harmonics and a free, recitative-like passage, and builds through a faster section before ending quietly.
