Touch the Sky for cello and piano was written in the winter of 1986 for Norman and Jeanne Fischer; the score is dated May 13, 1986, Randolph, Vermont. In her note, the composer links it to the bare Vermont winter landscape, where leafless branches seem to reach up and touch the sky. It opens with an unaccompanied cello line, and later sections use free, unmeasured writing over sustained, pedalled piano textures.
