About this piece
North Country Concerto for cello and orchestra (1995) was commissioned by cellist Frances Rowell and the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra. It has five movements. It moves from a brisk morning opening and a slow forest-like stillness, through a rough-hewn, folk-influenced movement with string-crossing bowings ('An Arc in the Sky'), to a blues-tinged treatment of 'The Riddle Song' and a short rock-influenced finale, 'Here and Now!', with prominent percussion. The orchestra is double winds, two horns, two trumpets, trombone, one percussionist and strings. A piano reduction of movements 1-4 is published.
