About this piece
Rebecca Clarke wrote the Rhapsody in 1923. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge commissioned it and is its dedicatee, and the manuscript, now at the Library of Congress, is dated 29 August 1923. According to the Rebecca Clarke Society, May Mukle and Myra Hess gave the first performance at Coolidge's Berkshire Festival in September 1923. The work has four movements, lasts about 24 minutes, and went unpublished for almost a century. Nimbus Music Publishing then issued a performing edition prepared by pianist John York from the manuscript.
