About this piece
A four-movement duo for cello and piano (Andante leading to Allegro non troppo, cantabile; Adagio non troppo; Scherzo in minuet tempo; Finale, Allegro vivace). It is the only one of Mayer's twelve works for this pairing titled Duo rather than Sonata, and she later revised it for violin and piano, publishing that version in 1863 as her Violin Sonata, Op. 17. The cello version survives in a fair-copy score and separate parts in the Berlin State Library, all free on IMSLP. Cellist Giulio Padoin and fortepianist Gabriele Lucherini made its first recording, released by Challenge Classics in 2026.
