About this piece
A quartet in two movements, Narrazione and Riflessioni, which Bacewicz finished in autumn 1963 and which was first performed on 24 September 1964 at the Warsaw Autumn festival. In her programme note for the premiere, quoted in Adrian Thomas's booklet for the Chandos recording, she wrote that four cellos drew her with their "rich soundworld" and that she largely set aside typical cello writing such as broad cantilena. Thomas places it among her most experimental works, built on texture, dissonance and string colour (including saltando and col legno) rather than conventional melody; PWM publishes the score and parts.
