About this piece
A five-minute unaccompanied piece first written in 1995 for solo violin and later issued in versions for viola and for cello. Thomas wrote it for the violinist Cathryn Tait, who was dying of cancer and played the premiere a few weeks before her death. The music falls loosely into an ABA shape and, in the composer's words, ends "on a question" with an unresolved major seventh (composer's program note). The cello version was premiered by Mihai Marica at the Harris Theater in Chicago on 6 December 2016.
