About this piece
A three-movement concerto for cello and chamber orchestra in which a small concertino of solo flute, oboe and violin, seated at the front, works alongside the soloist. It was commissioned by Thomas van Straaten for the 50th anniversary of the Aspen Music Festival and School, and David Finckel gave the premiere with the Aspen Music Festival Chamber Orchestra under Hugh Wolff on 16 July 1999. The movements move from majestic and driving, through a slow, mysterious middle, to a spirited finale, with cadenza passages and long cantabile lines for the cello.
