About this piece
A short fanfare for unaccompanied cello, commissioned by Joan and Irwin Jacobs for the La Jolla Chamber Music Society's SummerFest 2000 and dedicated to David Finckel, who premiered it and edited the published part. The opening sounds the same pitches on neighbouring strings like ringing bells; the line climbs gradually higher, is interrupted by dramatic low-register outbursts, and fades out at the top of the range with col legno, battuto and pizzicato. A note in the score explains that it is written without barlines and with irregular rhythms, to be played like an organised jazz improvisation.
