About this piece
A 12-minute work for cello and piano written in memory of Mstislav Rostropovich, made of four connected cantos played without a break (fast and slow sections alternating). Because Rostropovich was known for his pizzicato, plucked sound is central: the cello plays only pizzicato in Canto 1, and in Canto 2 the pianist plucks one string inside the piano for each of his 80 years. Matt Haimovitz and Geoffrey Burleson gave the premiere and recorded it for Oxingale. The composer allows it to be performed without Canto 1 (about 10 minutes), and the printed music differs between two possible orderings, so the version must be specified when ordering.
