About this piece
A large single-movement concerto commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for Lynn Harrell, who premiered it with the BSO under Christoph Eschenbach on 14 March 2013. Thomas composed it in 2012 and calls it "Scenes with Arias" with the cello as a singing storyteller (composer's note); contrasting sections run without a break, including jazz-inflected, spiccato and pizzicato passages, and the work begins and ends on the note A. The phoenix title came to the composer during composition and is not a programme.
