About this piece
A five-minute unaccompanied piece written in 2016 for solo violin, commissioned by Anthony Hawley as a 40th-birthday gift for violinist Rebecca Fischer, and later made available in versions for viola and cello. The title refers to the Titaness Rhea of Greek myth. Although the writing is precisely notated, Thomas wants it to sound like an improvisation the listener happens to overhear. Scott Kluksdahl premiered the cello version in Portland, Oregon, on 10 March 2017.
