About this piece
An unaccompanied piece of about five and a half minutes, first written for violinist Jennifer Koh's Shared Madness project and premiered at National Sawdust, Brooklyn, on 31 May 2016; the cello version is dedicated to Justus Schlichting and Scott Kluksdahl, who premiered it in Portland, Oregon, on 10 March 2017. In her program note Thomas says she set out to write a short piece that "shows off" the player across many characters, including soft playing, rich double stops and virtuosic, athletic passages. The title refers to the Roman goddess Venus.
