About this piece
A four-and-a-half-minute unaccompanied piece written for Cello Solos Today, a project that commissioned 12 new solos for intermediate cellists in partnership with the Talea Ensemble. It begins on the lowest note of the cello and gradually climbs to the top of its range, picturing an ascent across a rainbow bridge. The cello version was premiered on 5 February 2017 in New York by Lila Holyoke, then a seventh-grade student of Yari Bond; versions for violin and viola also exist. The piece is dedicated to Chris Gross and the Talea Ensemble, in memory of William G. Simpson.
Technical overview
Written for intermediate students; the line moves from the bottom of the cello's range up to its high register, so secure shifting and upper-position work are needed.
