About this piece
A seven-minute duo in which the cello plays pizzicato throughout, developed from the fast, jazzy pizzicato music of Thomas's Cantos for Slava. Commissioned by the Tanglewood Music Center and the Boston Symphony Orchestra and dedicated to Ellen Highstein, it was premiered by cellist Norman Fischer and pianist Bethany Pietroniro at Tanglewood on 6 August 2022. The composer's note cites the bass playing of Charles Mingus, Ron Carter and Ray Brown, Bach's counterpoint and the harmonies of Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk as influences, with no direct quotations; the two players trade interlocking hockets. Versions for double bass, marimba and bassoon with piano also exist.
