About this piece
A ten-minute work for cello and piano, commissioned by the Library of Congress and premiered by the Fischer Duo at Rice University on 21 January 1992; Kate Dillingham commissioned a revision, which she premiered with Blair McMillen at Merkin Hall, New York, on 16 April 2002. It opens with a virtuosic high cadenza for the cello and moves through four or five contrasting episodes, with unison running passages for both players; Thomas names Brahms, Messiaen, Debussy, jazz and Berg as influences. There are two optional endings, one quiet at about 9 1/2 minutes and a longer one at about 11 minutes that returns to the solitary mood of the opening.
