About this piece
Im Traume (In a Dream) is a ten-minute duo for cello and piano that Saariaho wrote in 1980 on a commission from the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). Cellist Veikko Höylä and pianist Liisa Pohjola recorded it for a radio broadcast in April 1981, and its first concert performance followed in 1982 at the Ung Nordisk Musik festival in Reykjavík, played by Anssi Karttunen and Tuija Hakkila. In her program note the composer says she wanted the piece to unfold the way dreams do, through sudden or gradual changes of mood and seemingly random but meaningful associations, ending on a final cello glissando.
