About this piece
Petals is a piece of about nine minutes for solo cello, written within a few days in early 1988 and dedicated to Anssi Karttunen, who premiered it in Bremen in May 1988. Its material is drawn directly from Saariaho's string quartet with electronics Nymphéa, which also gave the piece its name. It exists in two forms, unaccompanied or with optional live electronics (light reverberation and quarter-tone transposition), and it sets fragile, colouristic passages against more energetic figures with clear rhythmic and melodic shape.
