About this piece
Amers is a concerto for solo cello, a mixed chamber ensemble of winds, horns, percussion, harp and keyboards, and electronics, completed in 1992 at IRCAM. It was commissioned by IRCAM and the Barbican Centre, dedicated to Anssi Karttunen, and first performed in London on 8 December 1992 by Karttunen with the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra under Jukka-Pekka Saraste. The title, borrowed from Saint-John Perse, refers to the landmarks that guide sailors along a coast, and the solo cello part shares much of its material with Saariaho's Près for cello and electronics.
