About this piece
Près is an 18-minute, three-movement work for solo cello and live electronics, realised at IRCAM and written alongside the cello concerto Amers, with which it shares much of its material. It was commissioned for the Carrefour des Littératures Européennes de Strasbourg and dedicated to Anssi Karttunen, who premiered the first version in Strasbourg in November 1992; the final version was first heard at the Time of Music festival in Viitasaari in July 1994. The electronic part mixes synthesised sounds, stored cello sounds and real-time processing, and the composer connects the title with the sea and with Gauguin's painting By the Sea.
