About this piece
Neiges (Snows) is a 15-minute suite in five movements for eight cellos, commissioned by the city of Beauvais and premiered there by the Octuor de violoncelles de Beauvais on 11 May 1998. Saariaho wrote it after a season as visiting professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, treating snow and its forms as the basis for a set of variations: the movements range from the even, dark texture of Nuages de neige and the mirror symmetries of the two Étoiles de neige to the pizzicato ostinatos of Aiguilles de glace and the harmonic trills of Fleurs de neige. The publisher also lists versions for twelve cellos and for eight double basses.
