About this piece
Notes on Light is a five-movement cello concerto commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for its 125th anniversary and premiered by Anssi Karttunen with the BSO under Jukka-Pekka Saraste on 22 February 2007. The movements (Translucent, secret; On fire; Awakening; Eclipse; Heart of light) trace a journey toward light, and the score closes with a quotation from T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Besides the orchestral version, Chester Music publishes a version for cello and chamber ensemble and a cello-and-piano reduction.
