About this piece
Detto II is a one-movement, 15-minute work for solo cello and an ensemble of 13 players (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, two percussionists, celesta and string quintet), written in 1972 for the cellist Natalia Shakhovskaya, who premiered it in Moscow in May 1973 with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. According to the publisher's note, the Italian title ('said') reflects the story-telling quality of the music. Quarter-tone glissandi are central to the solo part, whose melodic steps widen from quarter tones to several octaves and narrow again as the piece moves from a meditative opening through a dramatic middle section to a quiet close.
